Org .Setting And Reporting
This internship is in the Human Resources Management Section (HRMS) of the Economic
and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). The intern will work with HR
colleagues on various tasks and will be under overall supervision of the Human Resources
Officer. The intern will primarily assist (in addition to several other tasks outlined below) in a
special project on the review of HR Policies of the United Nations, a unique opportunity at
the time of large-scale management reforms in the United Nations. The duration of an
ESCWA internship is normally two months on a full-time basis - this may be exceptionally
extended for a maximum period of six months. The internship certificate is awarded on the
recommendation of the supervisor.Interns are not paid and are responsible for all expenses
related to the internship.ESCWA accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents
and/or illness incurred during an internship. Therefore, upon awarding an internship,
candidates will be required to sign a statement confirming their understanding and acceptance
of the conditions of service.Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the
supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Duties may include, but are not limited to:1 - Conducts research on a diverse range of
assigned issues using multiple research sources; selects relevant material, analyzes
information and presents findings for internal review. 2 - Assists in the preparation of policy
opinions/advice on a wide range of human resources matters of the Organization.3 - Selects
and evaluates a variety of documents, summarizes pertinent material, collects and analyses
data and prepares background materials for assessment papers, studies, briefs and reports.4 -
Participates in technical meetings, conferences, and seminars and serves as secretary, as
necessary (takes notes, draft summary reports, minutes, notes for the files or assessment
reports for presentation to the head of the Section); monitors follow-up actions, etc. 5 -
Contribute to the re-organization of the Section's share drive by reviewing and analyzing the
contents of relevant documents; making a determination on the most appropriate relocation
folder; and performing the movement of the electronic files to such folder. 6 - Initiate required
actions for the potential migration of internal electronic documents to United Nation internetbased
platform. 7 - Assist with the reorganizing of the United Nations human resources
handbook (English and French) which is the online tool used by all the human resources
practitioners and staff at large.8 - Establishes internal databases; sets up, files, stores and
manages data and information relevant to the scope of unit activities.9 - Perform other duties
as assigned.

Education
To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following
conditions must be met: 1.Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:(a) be
enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or
higher);(b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme
(minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or(c) have graduated with a university degree (as
defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one year period of
graduation;2.Be computer literate in standard software applications;3.Have a demonstrated
keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals
of the Charter; and4.Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of
different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand
and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Work Experience
Applicants are not required to have professional work experience for participation in the
programme.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations. Arabic is also a working
language of ESCWA. For this post, fluency in written and spoken English is required.
Knowledge of Arabic is desirable.
